According to the dakota/english dictionary, wakanhdiota means wakanhdi-lightning, ota-many or much, this was probably manylightnings, because the name is back to front.
Huntko means a large water fowl or cormorant and tanka means large or great. so i would think a possible translation would be large or great cormorant.
Dawn: Wakanhdiota(Many Lightnings) was the son of Shakes The Earth When He Walks and Sits In THe Sunset Woman. Many Lightnings was married to Nancy Eastman i@1848. He took the name of his wife Nancy. From then on, he was known as Jacob Eastman and his descendants have used the Eastman Surname.he moved to Flandreau in 1869 and died there in 1876.Jacob Eastman is buried at Flandreau,S.D. in the cemetery of the First Presbyterian Church.

Jacob Eastmen and 3 of his older sons were caught heading to Canada in 1863. Ehake Unkshida (Pitiful last) aka Charles Eastman Jacobs youngest son escaped with Jacobs parents into Canada. After Jacob and his 3 sons were released from Davenports Camp MClellan in April of 1866 they were sent to Santee. In 1873 Jacob left Flandreau(?) and headed to Canada to find his son and rest of his family. He found his son in Canada and brought him back to SD briefly before sending him to school far away. Charles as we all know became a doctor. I hope we have more Eastmen descendants come to next years Memorial here in Davenport Iowa. Sara

Wow look at all of the information the two of you have gathered. nice job. Sara, did you go through the 2 sets of names from Carlisle School, Sioux Indians and the children from unknown tribes? There are Wolfs, Wolfes, and Red Wolfes on the lists.
Wow this is awsome information. We have Wakanhdiota listed as being married to Julia Oldman and they had the following children. Mahpiyakepopewin, Wonkinyatoyan, John Lightning, Anpetuwanjidan and Mary Henry. There marriage and children information were found in a Flute family in Flandreau I beleive.
nancy Eastman (Scott Eastman,Robert Eastman,,Lanthan Eastman, Abiah Bradley, Daniell,Danyall)) was a descendant of Daniel Bradley. She died before 1867.her father, Colonel Eastman was married to Cloudman's daughter, Mary. Jacob Eastman and his wife Nancy had the following children: Mary Eastman, born in 1848 at Oak Grove Village(bloomington) MN. She died in 1929 at the Sisseton Agency,SD. She married David Faribault.
Tunkanihdriskanskaswin. Tunkan- grandfather or a sacred stone
Ihdri - I have no idea, there are no r's in Dakota. Usually it looks like an r in handwriting back in the day however is should most of the time be an H
Ihdi- means the soft fat of animals, grease, oil, lard, butter
Skanskan- is sometimes red, to stir, to move about moving in motion
Hmmm, I am not sure if this helped. What married name did she take?

this is a long shot, but it could be woman who gathers sacred red stones. sara is also right in the definitions she put down. when there is more than one definition for each part of the word, it is hard to choose the right ones.

Does anyone know if Charles Eastman had a brother named Ed Eastman. Ed Eastman had a daughter named Adaile Eastman and Adaile had a son named Harold Rouse. Any help would be appreciated. Adaile Eastman went to Carlisle School.
My Beuchel Lakota-English dictionary says "wakan" means spirit, holy, sacred, or mysterious, like "Wakan Tanka", the Great Spirit. Lightning, according to Fr. Beuchel, is "wakinyan". Is he wrong about this?
